Shopify's Second Discovery Channel
When Shopify discusses AI search, it's generally a good idea to listen close. Their Q2 earnings call last week reads less like a traditional earnings call and more like a glimpse into the bleeding edge of AI search.
A few gems that stood out to me, all from Harley Finkelstein, President of Shopify:
While search engines rank by popularity against a handful of keywords, AI agents make multiple calls into Shopify's Catalog, working with richer structured data to match products with the buyer's specific intent rather than just keywords.
Ranking is a popularity contest, retrieval is a matching problem. You win matching problems by being specific and clear.
75% of AI-attributed purchases in Q2 came from outside the top 100 categories.
Being niche used to be a ceiling. It's now often a distribution advantage.
Buyers' shopping journeys are being compressed as half of all AI-referred sessions are landing directly on a product description page. That is 2.5 times more than what we see with traditional search.
When product discovery happens in a chat, the model does the comparison work for you. Your product page now has to close a visit that skipped your entire funnel.
The takeaway isn't that AI is taking share from traditional search, but that a second discovery channel now sits alongside it. It sends fewer visitors today, but they arrive already knowing what they want, and it favors whoever describes their product most precisely.
